The "or similar boat" trap
Here's the one thing to watch for. Many agencies quote you a lovely premium boat and call it luxury — or send great photos with the words "this or similar". In our experience, in around 9 out of 10 cases the "similar" boat that actually turns up is a category lower than what you were shown and promised. You only find out at the jetty, when it's too late.
How to protect yourself: always ask for the actual photos of the exact boat you're booking, and get it confirmed in writing that that is the boat you'll get — not "this or similar".

When to book
Peak houseboat season runs September to February, with a second busy spell around May. The busiest dates of all — when the good boats go first — are Diwali, Pooja (Navaratri) holidays, Christmas and New Year. If you're travelling then, book well in advance to get a good boat at a fair rate; last-minute in peak usually means paying more for less.
