How to plan a Kerala trip
A five-day trip needs fewer stops than a seven-day circuit. Choose the places that matter most and confirm the transfers before fixing your flights. Longer routes often start in Kochi, climb to the Munnar tea hills and Thekkady spice country, drop to the Alleppey backwaters for a houseboat night, and finish on a beach near Trivandrum — flying out of TRV so there's no long drive back to Kochi.

Kerala planning mistakes to avoid
- Squeezing too many one-night stops into a short trip — Kerala's drives are slow, and you'll spend the holiday in the car.
- Flying in and out of Kochi when your trip ends on a southern beach — finish near Trivandrum (TRV) instead.
- Pairing Wayanad and Munnar on a first 7-day trip — it's beautiful but too much driving; pick one range.
- Booking a houseboat expecting AC all night — boats moor and switch off engines, so AC usually runs 9pm–6am.
- Leaving Munnar and Periyar (Thekkady) tickets to the last minute in peak season — the good stays and permits go early.

How many days do you need for Kerala?
Our five-day route has four nights across Kochi, Munnar and an Alleppey houseboat. Seven days adds Thekkady and Kovalam in six nights, with departure from TRV. Ten-day routes are starting ideas to tailor and confirm for your dates.
Is 5 days enough for Kerala?
Five days gives you four nights. Our default uses Kochi 1, Munnar 2 and an Alleppey houseboat 1, then COK departure. Adding Thekkady means changing those stops or adding a night; the houseboat transfer and flight window still need confirmation.
What is the best time to visit Kerala?
October to March has the best weather and is busiest; April–May is hot but quieter and cheaper; the June–September monsoon is lush, green, low-season and the best time for ayurveda.
How many nights should I spend in Munnar?
Two nights is ideal — a full day for tea estates, viewpoints and Eravikulam, plus arrival and onward-drive days. One night feels rushed given the long drive up.
Alleppey or Kumarakom for a houseboat?
Alleppey has more boats and busier, classic backwaters; Kumarakom is quieter and more resort-like on Vembanad Lake. Families and couples wanting calm often prefer Kumarakom; first-timers usually pick Alleppey.
Varkala or Kovalam — which beach is better?
Varkala is a dramatic cliff with a laid-back, boho feel; Kovalam is a classic curved beach with more resorts and closer to Trivandrum airport. Both work as a southern finish; Kovalam is the easier last-night-before-flight.
Munnar or Wayanad — which is better?
Munnar is tea-country hills and is on the classic circuit; Wayanad is greener forest-and-wildlife country in the north and adds real driving. For a first 5–7 day trip, Munnar fits better; add Wayanad when you have 8+ days.
Is a Kerala houseboat worth it?
For most people, yes — a night drifting through the backwaters with meals cooked on board is the signature Kerala experience. One night is plenty; we run our own Alleppey boat, so we can tell you honestly which boats are worth the money.
Should I start my Kerala trip in Kochi or Trivandrum?
Most people fly into Kochi (COK), loop through the hills and backwaters, and fly out of Trivandrum (TRV) after a southern beach — it avoids a long drive back. If you're only doing hills and backwaters, Kochi in-and-out is fine.
Do I need a private cab in Kerala?
For a multi-stop trip, a private cab and driver is the easiest way — the roads wind through hills and public transport between stops is slow. Trains work well on the flat coastal stretch (Ernakulam–Alappuzha–Trivandrum).
What does a Kerala trip cost?
Indicatively a couple spends about ₹6,000–10,000 a day comfortably, ₹12,000–20,000 for premium stays and ₹25,000+ for luxury — covering hotels, a private cab and some meals, excluding flights. We quote the real figure for your dates.
