By the Kerala Escapes team · updated July 2026
Distance
≈140–142 km
By road
4–5 hours
Thekkady to Alleppey is about 140–142 km by road and takes roughly 4–5 hours, via NH183 through Kanjirappally and Changanassery. It's the classic descent from the spice hills to the backwaters — we time it so you reach Alleppey for an afternoon houseboat check-in, with the private cab included.
The drive: Thekkady to Alleppey
The most direct road is NH183: Kumily → Kanjirappally → Changanassery → Alleppey. A scenic alternative loops via Vagamon and Kottayam and is slightly longer.
Alternate route: Via Vagamon and Kottayam — a little longer, but a pretty hill-to-plains drive.
How to make the journey
Private cab (what we arrange)
Indicatively ₹3,200–6,000 one-way (sedan to SUV, market rate, before tolls). We run this leg with a private cab — ask us for our current rate.
By bus
KSRTC buses run roughly every 1–1.5 hours (ordinary to AC, ~4½–5½ hours, around ₹180–300), though often via Changanassery or Kottayam rather than direct. Check KSRTC for current services.
By train
There's no direct train. A rail workaround goes via Kottayam (then ~1 hour on to Alleppey); most travellers do this leg by road.
Best time to leave & where to stop
Leave Thekkady by about 7:30–8am. On paper it's a 3–3½ hour drive, but realistically it's closer to 4–4½ hours with stops — an early start gets you to Alleppey by noon for a private houseboat check-in and a ~12:30 cruise. (Shared boats only start cruising around 1:30pm, so you have a little more leeway there.)
- Vandiperiyar and Peermade/Kuttikkanam, in spice and tea country
- Kanjirappally and Changanassery on the way down
In monsoon the Kumily ghat bends are slippery — allow extra time and drive in daylight. October–February is easiest.
Local knowledge from our drivers
- Timing matters for the houseboat: start by 7:30–8am so you reach Alleppey by noon — private boats check in at 12 and cruise from about 12:30.
- On a shared boat you have more room to breathe: those cruises don't start until around 1:30pm.
