Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey Itinerary: The Kerala Hill-and-Backwater Circuit

The Munnar-Thekkady-Alleppey itinerary is Kerala's hill-and-backwater core: two nights in Munnar's tea estates, a Periyar wildlife night in Thekkady, and a backwater houseboat near Alleppey, with Kochi airport as the gateway in and out. Allow about 5-6 nights including arrival; it's the tea-garden, jungle and kettuvallam trio without a beach detour.
Day by day
Day 1 · Arrive Kochi → Munnar
Fly into Cochin (COK) — the practical gateway for the hill circuit. If you land early, transfer straight to Munnar: ~109-130 km, about 3.5-4.5 hours via NH85. (Landing late? Spend the first night in Fort Kochi and drive up next morning —) Arrive Munnar for evening tea-garden views. Overnight Munnar.
Day 2 · Munnar
Early start at Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai) for Nilgiri Tahr and Western Ghats views — reached only by the compulsory shuttle bus from the entrance, with capped numbers and online tickets that sell out, so book at least 2 days ahead (2-5 days on peak weekends). Then the Tata Tea Museum for a live processing demo and scenic estate drives at Pothamedu and Lockhart Gap. Mattupetty Dam boating if time allows. Skip the ticketed 'photo points'. Overnight Munnar.
Day 3 · Munnar → Thekkady (Kumily)
Transfer Munnar → Thekkady: ~91-100 km, about 3-4 hours on narrow, winding hill roads via Devikulam-Pooppara. Arrive by early afternoon and take a pre-booked Periyar Lake boat cruise (~1.5 hr inside the Tiger Reserve; carry the exact photo ID used in the booking, cross-checked before boarding). Add a 1-hour guided spice plantation walk in Kumily. Overnight Thekkady.
Day 4 · Thekkady
A second Thekkady night is what makes this circuit relaxed rather than rushed — use the morning for a Periyar eco-tourism programme: a 3-hour guided Nature Walk or, for fit travellers, a dawn-to-dusk Bamboo Rafting trip (~8am-5pm, limited seats and an armed guide, book ahead) for the best wildlife odds and scenery. Afternoon for a Kumily town stroll and spice/tea shopping, or a Kathakali/Kalaripayattu show. Overnight Thekkady. (Short on time? Drop this day for a 4-night version.)
Day 5 · Thekkady → Alleppey
Transfer Thekkady → Alleppey: ~140-142 km, about 4-5 hours via NH183 through Kuttikkanam/Changanassery (no direct train). Board your houseboat at noon check-in and cruise the Punnamada/Vembanad backwaters until it anchors by ~6pm (no night cruising allowed), with a short morning cruise before ~9am check-out. One night on the kettuvallam is ideal for most. Overnight on the houseboat. Note: a direct Munnar → Alleppey drive (~165-175 km, 4.5-5.5 h) exists if you ever want to skip Thekkady — but that defeats the point of this hill-circuit.
Day 6 · Alleppey → Kochi (departure)
After houseboat check-out (~9am), transfer back to Kochi for your flight, or add a 2-3 hr shikara through the narrow village canals that big houseboats can't reach before you leave. This closes the loop at the COK gateway. For a beach extension instead of flying out, the 7-day itinerary continues south to Kovalam.

Travellers who specifically want Kerala's tea hills, a wildlife reserve and the backwaters — the hill-and-water core — and are happy to skip the beach. Couples, honeymooners and nature lovers; works well as a focused 5-6 night loop from Kochi.

A compact loop, so cost is driven by hotel tier, houseboat category and whether transfers are private car or shared, plus any add-on Periyar eco-programmes (which carry their own forest-department permit fees). June-September monsoon makes Munnar's hills lush and waterfalls (Lakkam/Attukal) full, but adds landslide/road risk on the Munnar-Thekkady hill roads in July-August and can bring houseboat route restrictions on heavy-rain days. Eravikulam can close in peak downpours and shuts annually for Nilgiri Tahr calving (generally Feb-March) — confirm it's open. Prices are lowest now; Sept-March is the most comfortable window.
