About Alleppey

Alappuzha — Alleppey — is the heart of Kerala's backwaters and the reason most people come to the state. Once a busy trading port, it's now a maze of palm-lined canals, lagoons and the vast Vembanad Lake, best seen from a houseboat drifting past paddy fields that sit below sea level. It earned the nickname 'Venice of the East', and it's the one stop we'd never leave off a first Kerala trip.

A quieter, cheaper alternative — a small canoe boat into the narrow canals the big houseboats can't reach, usually 1–2 hours.

If you're here in August, the Nehru Trophy on Punnamada Lake is Kerala's most famous snake-boat race — thunderous 100-oar chundan vallams and huge crowds.

Beyond the houseboats, the Kuttanad villages — coir-making, duck farms and the below-sea-level R-Block farmland — are the backwaters most tourists miss.

Best time to visit

October to March is peak — cool, dry and the best weather. The June–September monsoon turns the backwaters lush and green (and cheaper), and it's the season for Alleppey's ayurveda. The Nehru Trophy snake-boat race is in August.
