Kerala 7 Days Itinerary: Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey & Kovalam
By the Kerala Escapes team · updated September 2026
This seven-day Kerala itinerary has six nights: one in Kochi, two in Munnar, one in Thekkady, one on an Alleppey houseboat and one in Kovalam. Arrive at Cochin airport and depart from Trivandrum airport on day seven. It covers several landscapes, but it is an active circuit with frequent hotel changes, not a slow beach holiday.
7 days, 6 nights: where you sleep
| Overnight stop | Nights |
|---|---|
| Kochi | 1 |
| Munnar | 2 |
| Thekkady | 1 |
| Alleppey houseboat | 1 |
| Kovalam | 1 |
| Total | 6 |
Before you book your flights
- Count your arrival and departure as travel days. These routes assume a private car between overnight stops; rail or bus travel needs a different day-by-day plan.
- Confirm the exact hotel, boat boarding point and boarding window before booking transfers. A drive from Fort Kochi is not the same journey as one from Cochin airport (COK).
- Boat hours, activity tickets, rooms and transfers depend on your dates. Ask for a written itinerary with these details before paying; the sample route is not an availability guarantee.
- This version uses COK for arrival and TRV for departure. If you must fly home from COK, replace the Kovalam finish with a planned Kochi return; do not simply add the long return drive to a tight flight day.
- A second Kochi night or another beach night must replace an existing overnight stop or extend the trip. The route below leaves on day seven, not the following morning.
Day by day

Day 1 · Arrive in Kochi
Keep arrival day light. With an early enough arrival, spend the available time in Fort Kochi; with a late flight, consider an airport-area stay and rest. Choose accommodation with the next morning’s transfer in mind. There is one Kochi night in this route. A full extra heritage day needs a different allocation, explained below.
Overnight: Kochi

Day 2 · Kochi to Munnar
Transfer to Munnar after agreeing the pickup point and a realistic travel window. A hill-road journey with breaks can occupy much of the day, so leave ambitious excursions for tomorrow. If time remains, choose something close to your hotel instead of crossing the region for a single viewpoint. This is your first Munnar night.
Overnight: Munnar

Day 3 · Explore Munnar
Keep one full day for Munnar rather than packing it into a transfer morning. Choose a tea-country outing: the Tea Museum at Nallathanni Estate offers a different focus from an outdoor excursion to Eravikulam National Park. Pick around your interests, hotel location, current opening and entry arrangements; do not assume both fit simply because they are labelled Munnar. Keep an alternative if access or conditions change. Return to the same hotel for your second Munnar night.
Overnight: Munnar

Day 4 · Munnar to Thekkady
Travel to Thekkady and choose an afternoon activity only after checking the arrival window. For Periyar boating, check the official booking information and allow for the reserve transfer to the boat landing; carry the identity document used to book. Do not promise a morning cruise after the drive from Munnar or a wildlife sighting on any departure. A spice-country visit can be an alternative if its timing and availability are confirmed. There is one Thekkady night.
Overnight: Thekkady

Day 5 · Thekkady to Alleppey
Coordinate an early departure with the boat’s confirmed boarding time and landing point. Skip extra morning activities if they put that connection at risk. Before paying, ask for the exact boat arrangement, meals, AC coverage and hours, and checkout time. Spend the night on the houseboat. If the road transfer and boarding window do not work together, change the cruise or overnight arrangement rather than claiming a late arrival is guaranteed.
Overnight: Alleppey houseboat

Day 6 · Alleppey to Kovalam
After the agreed houseboat checkout, travel south to Kovalam. Treat this as a transfer day with whatever time remains for the coast, such as Lighthouse Beach, not a full day at the resort. Current conditions determine which activities are suitable. This single Kovalam night places the final overnight stop near the TRV departure end of the route. If a longer beach stay matters more than another destination, remove a stop or extend the trip.
Overnight: Kovalam

Day 7 · Depart from Trivandrum
Travel from your Kovalam accommodation to Trivandrum airport (TRV) at the time agreed around your flight and airline check-in requirement. A late flight may leave spare time, but do not book a timed activity that compromises the transfer. The trip ends today. Sleeping in Kovalam again and leaving tomorrow would make it eight days and seven nights.
Departure day — no overnight stay included
Six nights means choosing your priorities
The default includes one Kochi night and one Kovalam night. If you want two nights in Kochi, remove the Kovalam overnight stop, shift the later stages and plan departure from COK after the backwaters. Alternatively add one day and one night to keep every stop.
Varkala is a separately tailored beach option, not another name for Kovalam. Changing the beach changes transfer and airport planning. Ask for that version explicitly rather than following the Kovalam day blocks unchanged.
When a Kochi return makes more sense
A return flight from COK may suit your travel plans better. In that case, use the final night in Kochi instead of Kovalam, and get the houseboat-to-hotel transfer confirmed. You still have six nights; the beach has been exchanged for a simpler final departure day.
For families or anyone who dislikes repeated hotel changes, fewer stops may be the better seven-day trip. Two nights in the hills do not compensate for every other stay being a single night. Tell the team which experiences matter most.
Five days versus seven days
The five-day guide focuses on Kochi, Munnar and an Alleppey houseboat in four nights. This seven-day route adds Thekkady and Kovalam in six nights. Choose by the time you want to spend in each place and the flights you can use, not just the number of destinations on the card.
What the one-night stops mean
Outside Munnar, each stop has one night. Transfer days leave limited time for sightseeing, especially before the houseboat boarding window. If you would rather slow down, drop a destination or extend the trip instead of assuming every day is a full day of activities.

Questions about this itinerary
Is this seven days and six nights?
Yes. The nights are Kochi 1, Munnar 2, Thekkady 1, Alleppey houseboat 1 and Kovalam 1. Day seven is departure from TRV. No day-eight flight is assumed.
Can I fly in and out of Kochi?
Yes, with a different finish. Replace the Kovalam night with a Kochi night and confirm the return transfer from the backwaters. The default on this page departs from TRV.
Does seven days include two full beach days?
No. Day six includes the transfer to Kovalam and day seven includes departure. Add nights or remove another stop if a substantial beach stay is the priority.
Does an overnight houseboat stay mean sailing all night?
No. An overnight stay does not promise continuous sailing. Confirm the boat’s actual cruising hours, mooring arrangements, meals and checkout time before booking.
Best for
Travellers with a full week who want hills, wildlife-reserve country, backwaters and a beach night in one trip, and who are comfortable with a new hotel most nights.
What it costs
Ask for a quote for your whole party and exact dates. Compare the hotel and room category, number of rooms, private-car route, boat category, whether the boat is private or shared, and its AC availability and operating hours. Check which meals, taxes, parking, other applicable fees and activity tickets are included. Flights, optional activities, extra beds and additional meals should be itemised. A per-person price and a whole-boat price are not interchangeable. Flights are excluded from this sample land itinerary; ask for extra-person and child rules in the written quote.
In monsoon
Weather and operating conditions can affect a trip. Check current local advice, transfer arrangements and boat operations for your travel dates, and ask what happens if a booked activity changes. Do not choose a trip on the promise of guaranteed clear views, swimming conditions or the lowest seasonal price.
