Kochi to Munnar Distance, Route & Time
By the Kerala Escapes team · updated July 2026
Distance
≈130 km (≈109 km from COK airport)
By road
3–4.5 hours
Kochi to Munnar is about 130 km by road via NH85 (Kothamangalam–Neriamangalam–Adimali) and takes roughly 3½–4½ hours. From Cochin International Airport (COK) it's around 109 km and about 3½ hours. Most travellers arriving in Kerala do this leg first — we arrange the private airport transfer to Munnar as part of the trip.
The drive: Kochi to Munnar
Take NH85 via Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali. The first half is easy highway; the last stretch climbs the Western Ghats past tea estates into Munnar.
Alternate route: An alternate via NH544 and Perumbavoor (~134 km) exists, but the road quality is only average — the NH85 line is the usual choice.
How to make the journey
Private cab (what we arrange)
Indicatively ₹1,900–4,000 one-way from Kochi or COK (sedan to SUV; hill and toll surcharges may apply). We arrange the private transfer with a driver — ask us for our current rate.
By bus
Frequent KSRTC buses run Ernakulam–Munnar (from about ₹190, ~4 hours); private buses take longer. Check KSRTC for current timings.
By train
There's no railway in Munnar — the nearest railheads are Aluva and Ernakulam Junction (~110–125 km), then road onward.
Best time to leave & where to stop
If you're landing at COK, aim to be on the road by early afternoon so you climb the ghats in daylight. From Kochi city, leave early to beat the morning traffic.
- Cheeyappara & Valara Waterfalls on NH85
- Tea estates near Adimali and Pallivasal
June–September the ghat sections get slippery and uneven with occasional landslides — daytime driving is best. September–March is the prime season.
Local knowledge from our drivers
- Our drivers take the Kothamangalam → Neriamangalam → Adimali → Anachal line into Munnar, passing the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls — the scenic stretch everyone stops to photograph.
- The route differs slightly depending on where you start: from Cochin airport it's via Kalady and Perumbavoor; from Ernakulam/Aluva railway station it's via Aluva and Perumbavoor before joining the same road.
- Good places to stop: Satva pure-veg restaurant near Kalady (airport road) or the Indian Coffee House midway; once in Munnar, Prakriti (veg and non-veg) is a reliable pick.
- Landslide watch: the Adimali–Cheeyappara–Valara stretch can be slip-prone in heavy monsoon — we keep an eye on conditions and adjust the start time when needed.
