Kerala 5 Days Itinerary: Kochi, Munnar & Alleppey

This five-day Kerala route uses four nights: one in Kochi, two in Munnar and one on an Alleppey houseboat, followed by departure from Cochin airport on day five. This route leaves out Thekkady and the southern beaches so you have a full day in the hills. The hill-to-houseboat transfer and final flight still need careful timing.

Before you book your flights

  • Count your arrival and departure as travel days. These routes assume a private car between overnight stops; rail or bus travel needs a different day-by-day plan.
  • Confirm the exact hotel, boat boarding point and boarding window before booking transfers. A drive from Fort Kochi is not the same journey as one from Cochin airport (COK).
  • Boat hours, activity tickets, rooms and transfers depend on your dates. Ask for a written itinerary with these details before paying; the sample route is not an availability guarantee.
  • Arrive in Kochi on day one. A late arrival can mean an airport-area hotel and less Fort Kochi sightseeing; do not add another hotel night without extending the trip.
  • Choose the day-five flight only after confirming boat checkout, the drive from its landing point to COK and your airline’s required airport-arrival time. An early flight may require replacing the boat night with an airport-area stay.

Day by day

Kochi

Day 1 · Arrive in Kochi

Use the first day to settle in. If your flight and transfer leave enough time, choose a short walk around Fort Kochi rather than a list of timed attractions. If you land late, an airport-area stay may be more useful than driving across the city just to sleep. Tell the planner which area you choose: it changes the next morning’s pickup. This is the first of four nights, not an extra arrival night.

Overnight: Kochi

Munnar

Day 2 · Kochi to Munnar

Make the journey to Munnar the main task today. Confirm pickup from your actual hotel and leave room for breaks on the hill roads. Keep the afternoon to a nearby viewpoint or a quiet walk if arrival time and weather suit it. Save longer sightseeing for tomorrow; adding a full Kochi sightseeing morning makes this transfer day less forgiving.

Overnight: Munnar

Munnar

Day 3 · A full day in Munnar

Keep one full day for Munnar rather than packing it into a transfer morning. Choose a tea-country outing: the Tea Museum at Nallathanni Estate offers a different focus from an outdoor excursion to Eravikulam National Park. Pick around your interests, hotel location, current opening and entry arrangements; do not assume both fit simply because they are labelled Munnar. Keep an alternative if access or conditions change. Return to the same hotel for your second Munnar night.

Overnight: Munnar

Alleppey

Day 4 · Munnar to Alleppey

This is the tightest connection in the five-day route. Agree the hill-road pickup and the boat’s boarding window together; do not add sightseeing stops first and hope to catch up. Confirm the landing point, meals, cabin arrangements and checkout time in writing. The night is spent on the houseboat, which does not mean it sails all night. If the transfer cannot reach the confirmed boarding window, change the plan before booking: use a backwater hotel and a separately timed short cruise, or add a night.

Overnight: Alleppey houseboat

Kochi

Day 5 · Alleppey to Cochin airport

Disembark at the agreed time and transfer to COK for your flight. Work backwards from the airline’s airport-arrival requirement and allow for the actual road journey from your boat landing point. Do not use a central-Kochi drive estimate as the airport journey. Keep additional sightseeing out of a tight departure day. Leaving the next morning would make this a six-day trip with another night, not the five-day itinerary shown here.

Departure day — no overnight stay included

Why this five-day route leaves out Thekkady

Kochi, two Munnar nights and a houseboat night already use all four nights. Adding a Thekkady stay while keeping those stops requires a fifth night. You can redesign the trip around fewer Munnar nights or a day cruise, but that is a different itinerary with different compromises.

Choose the seven-day guide if Thekkady and a southern beach are priorities. Keep this version if your main choices are a short Kochi introduction, time in the tea hills and an overnight backwater experience.

If your arrival or departure does not fit

A late day-one arrival means cutting sightseeing, not quietly adding day six. An early day-five flight may make a houseboat final night unsuitable. Ask for a different final-night arrangement before paying for the flights or boat.

If you want an easier pace, reduce the trip to Kochi and the backwaters, or add days. A route that fits the calendar on paper still needs hotel-specific travel times and confirmed boarding arrangements.

Five days or seven?

Five days keeps three overnight bases and one full Munnar day. Seven days can add Thekkady and a Kovalam night, with arrival at COK and departure from TRV. It also involves more hotel changes; extra destinations do not automatically make a trip more restful.

Is a compact trip right for you?

This is a compact trip. Two days include substantial transfers around the Munnar stay, leaving one full day in the hills and the houseboat experience within its confirmed hours. Choose fewer bases or add a night if time in each place matters more than covering both landscapes.

Questions about this itinerary

Does this itinerary include four or five nights?

Four: Kochi for one night, Munnar for two and an Alleppey houseboat for one. Day five is the departure day, with no overnight stay included.

Can I include Thekkady in five days?

Only by changing the allocation, such as reducing time elsewhere or replacing the overnight boat experience. The default on this page leaves it out. Do not add a Thekkady night to this plan and still call it four nights.

Can I take a morning flight home on day five?

Do not assume the houseboat checkout and airport transfer will fit. Share your exact flight and boat landing point before booking; you may need an airport-area final night instead.

Does an overnight houseboat stay mean sailing all night?

No. An overnight stay does not promise continuous sailing. Confirm the boat’s actual cruising hours, mooring arrangements, meals and checkout time before booking.

Best for

First-time visitors with limited leave who want a hill-and-backwater taste of Kerala without adding Thekkady or the south coast.

What it costs

Ask for a quote for your whole party and exact dates. Compare the hotel and room category, number of rooms, private-car route, boat category, whether the boat is private or shared, and its AC availability and operating hours. Check which meals, taxes, parking, other applicable fees and activity tickets are included. Flights, optional activities, extra beds and additional meals should be itemised. A per-person price and a whole-boat price are not interchangeable. Flights are excluded from this sample land itinerary; ask for extra-person and child rules in the written quote.

In monsoon

Weather and operating conditions can affect a trip. Check current local advice, transfer arrangements and boat operations for your travel dates, and ask what happens if a booked activity changes. Do not choose a trip on the promise of guaranteed clear views, swimming conditions or the lowest seasonal price.
