Kerala 5 Days Itinerary: Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey

The classic first-timer Kerala 5-day route runs Kochi to Munnar to Thekkady to Alleppey: one night in Fort Kochi, two in Munnar's tea hills, a Periyar wildlife stop in Thekkady, and a backwater houseboat night near Alleppey before flying out of Kochi. It pairs Western Ghats scenery with the iconic kettuvallam cruise at a realistic pace.
Day by day
Day 1 · Kochi arrival
Fly into Cochin (COK) and settle in Fort Kochi. Spend the afternoon on a heritage walk past Santa Cruz Basilica, Princess Street and the Dutch Cemetery, then watch the Chinese fishing nets at Vasco da Gama Square at sunset (free, most photogenic at golden hour). Book a Kathakali show at the Kerala Kathakali Centre or Cochin Cultural Centre — arrive around 5pm for the makeup demo, performance runs ~6-7:30pm. Keep it light; you only have one night here.
Day 2 · Kochi → Munnar
Morning at the Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace murals and Paradesi Synagogue with the Jew Town spice bazaar — plan this for a non-Friday (palace shut Fridays) and non-Saturday (synagogue shut Saturdays) so you catch both. Then transfer Kochi → Munnar: ~109-130 km, about 3.5-4.5 hours by car via NH85. Arrive Munnar by late afternoon for your first tea-garden views. Overnight Munnar.
Day 3 · Munnar
Full day in the hills. Start early at Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai) for Nilgiri Tahr and Western Ghats views — it's reached only by compulsory shuttle bus from the entrance and online tickets sell out, so book at least 2 days ahead (peak weekends 2-5 days). Afternoon: Tata Tea Museum for a live processing demo, then scenic tea-estate drives and viewpoints at Pothamedu or Lockhart Gap. Mattupetty Dam is a pleasant add if time allows (busy on weekends). Skip the ticketed 'photo points' like Echo Point. Overnight Munnar. Adventurous travellers can swap in a pre-dawn Kolukkumalai sunrise jeep safari.
Day 4 · Munnar → Thekkady (Kumily)
Transfer Munnar → Thekkady: ~91-100 km, about 3-4 hours on narrow, winding hill roads (don't expect highway speeds). Aim to arrive by early afternoon. Pre-book a Periyar Lake boat cruise (~1.5 hr inside the Tiger Reserve; five daily slots, carry the exact photo ID used in the booking as it's cross-checked before boarding) — a late-afternoon slot suits an afternoon arrival. Add a 1-hour guided spice plantation walk in Kumily, or a Kathakali/Kalaripayattu evening show. Manage expectations: the cruise is scenic lake-and-forest, not a guaranteed safari. Overnight Thekkady.
Day 5 · Thekkady → Alleppey → Kochi
Transfer Thekkady → Alleppey: ~140-142 km, about 4-5 hours by car via NH183 (no direct train). Houseboats check in around noon and cruise the Punnamada/Vembanad backwaters until they anchor by ~6pm (no night cruising is allowed), so an early start gets you onto the kettuvallam in good time for the signature Alleppey experience. Note: on a tight 5-day plan this is the trade-off day — a long drive plus a half-day cruise. If you'd rather not rush, this is exactly where the 7-day version adds breathing room. Depart from Kochi the next morning, or shorten to a Day-5 shikara if your flight is same-day.

First-time visitors who want the complete Kerala highlight reel — colonial port, tea hills, a wildlife reserve and a backwater houseboat — in a tight, well-paced week. Couples and small families especially.

For a June-September (monsoon) departure like late June: backwater and Munnar bookings are cheaper and the hills are intensely green, but expect rain, possible houseboat route restrictions on heavy-rain days, and landslide/road risk on the Munnar hill roads in July-August. Eravikulam can close during peak monsoon downpours and also shuts annually for Nilgiri Tahr calving (generally Feb-March) — confirm it's open before relying on it. Waterfalls around Munnar (Lakkam/Attukal) are at their fullest now.
